 The Other Wes Moore

(Chapters 4-6)

Music played a special role in Wes Moore's life, particularly hip hop music. He felt that it wasn't just music and lyrics, it was also validating for him. As Wes was balancing two lives, his life in the Bronx and his academic life at school, hip hop music was a way that connected him with kids in the neighborhood and kept him credible. Hip hop music was always a window into Wes's life that his classmates at school could understand. We had felt that hip hop was demonstrated the voice of his generation working through all of their fear, anxieties, success, failures, revolutions, and wealth. Music was an outlook for Wes and he was able to find validation for his feelings and understanding.

Music is so influential and comforting to many people. There are so many different genres of music, and each band or artist is able to tell their story or send a message that many individuals can relate to. Music in my life is social. I enjoy listening to music, and I love attending live concert events. I feel that music brings people together. It is a common thread that can bring us together with people who we think we might not have anything in common with.

Lyrics in songs are more than that. Musicians have a way of putting our feelings into words and coordinating those feelings with instrumentals. It can be an overpowering feeling. There are songs for every feeling; happiness, sadness, loss, heartbreak, the list could go on. Music is a way to express ourselves, and for me personally since I am not a musician, I am happy to enjoy the music that others have created that speaks to me. My mood is very affected by the music I listen to. When I am feeling happy I like listening to songs that are fast and upbeat. If I am feeling sad or down, I'll listen to songs that might help uplift my mood, or I just want to feel validated in knowing that others have felt the way I am feeling. Music is deeply personal and intimate to the listener. I think it can be universal to all people, because it has the ability to be so personal for everyone.

I agree enjoying live concerts events because of the feeling it gives us just experiencing your favorite kind of music and living in the moment. Music brings comfort to many people and in a way it helps them to get throughout their rough days. I remember connecting with others just because of our similar taste of music and it can even create friendships. The lyrics of songs helps us express how we feel and I see it that way.

  2. Hey Brianna!
I loved your post. I believe that music can serve as a form of therapy and can also spark conversations amongst others. You can share a common interest of a certain song with someone and an entire friendship can be started over that. It's an amazing connection to create with someone and is a great escape when you aren't feeling your best. It can also serve as a form of joy and happiness.
